The Northeast Regional Cod Tagging Program has been funded by
NOAA Fisheries,
Northeast
Regional Office, through the Cooperative Research Partners
Initiative (CRPI),
after approval by the New England Fishery Management Council
(NEFMC).
Program Coordinator:
The Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI)
coordinates the program from the central location of Portland,
Maine. GMRI is responsible for purchasing and distributing
tagging equipment and research materials; designing and quality
control of the online database; facilitating communication
between fishermen and tagging
partners; hosting update meetings and initial training events;
designing and distributing outreach materials to raise awareness
of the program throughout the study region; and undertaking
analysis and report writing for the Program.
Tagging Organizations:
The following organizations are involved
in tagging Atlantic cod for this program:

(DMR) • Cape Cod Commercial Hook Fishermen’s
Association (CCCHFA) • Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences
(MANOMET) • The Island
Institute • The Canadian Department of Fisheries and
Oceans (DFO)
Commercial Fishermen:
Around 105 commercial
and recreational vessels have been involved in the releasing
tagged fish for the Northeast Regional Cod Tagging Program.
